Japanese designer Mihara Yasuhiro has been producing intractably designed and eye-catching footwear since graduating from Tama Art University in Tokyo (alma mater of the legendary Issey Miyake). Just three years after launching his eponymous line, he unveiled what would be a decade-long partnership with footwear giant PUMA, solidifying his name as one to watch early on in his career. As he looked for new ways to wear his shoes, Yasuhiro began studying trousers, then shirting and outerwear, thus adding clothing to his collections in 1999. His deconstructed designs result from decades of research and experimentation; Yasuhiro is known for his mastery of trompe l’oeil, layering undershirts and thermals to create masterful optical illusions. The F/W 2023 collection, “SELF-CULTURE,” comes from Yasuhiro’s memories of Tokyo in the 1990s and includes reimagined, elaborately disheveled iterations of his personal collection of vintage clothing.
